10000 Discrete Events

A dozen chunks of ice impregnated with pebbles hang from the ceiling. As the ice melts, the pebbles are freed and fall onto an assemblage of resonating objects, creating an automatic rhythm.
The ice is visually fascinating. Some strata in the ice chunks are tinted with red beet juice , yellow tumeric, or green tea, which add to the beauty of the devolving forms.
10000 Discrete Events captivates spectators, for whom the sense of Time is redefined by the pattern of events, that is, falling pebbles. Future events become the source of much expectation, as spectators recognize single pebbles or clusters of pebbles nearing the falling point. However, the temporal space between events is not predictable.

10000 Discrete Events was first installed at Dreamland Theater for the group show, Thaw.

The piece was reproduced outdoors for the April Breakfast Grant sponsored by the Ann Arbor Institute for Regenerative Studies.
